Certification Programs

DTL provides consumer product testing and is actively involved in sponsoring and administering certification programs for the bunk bed industry, public playground equipment and surfacing industry and Protective Eyewear Certification Council (PECC).

Certification Programs

These programs are conducted in accordance with ANSI Z34.1-1993 for Certification-Third-Party Programs for Products, Processes and Services and appropriate standards. All programs involve, at a minimum, product evaluation and a visit by DTL inspectors annually. Directories of Certified Products are issued.

Bunk Beds

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) since 1994 has recalled more than a half-million bunk bed units. The CPSC also reports 89 deaths since 1990 from entrapment in bunk beds. In response to these statistics, DTL became the sponsor and administrator of a bunk bed certification program in 1994.

DTL will partner with you to assure that your beds are in compliance with the safety standard. In fact, we participate in the development of the ASTM Bunk Bed standard. In addition to sponsoring and administering the program, DTL performs testing and witnesses tests on representative samples of each participating bunk bed model on a periodic basis. The program is open to all bunk bed manufacturers, retailers and distributors.

Public Playground Equipment and Playground Surfacing Material

DTL serves as an administrator for the International Playground Equipment Manufacturers Association (IPEMA) certification program. Testing is performed to ASTM F1487 Standard Consumer Safety Specification and ASTM F1292 Standard Specification for Impact Attenuation of Surface Systems Under and Around Playground Equipment. The program is open to all entities that offer public playground equipment for sale. A listing of all certified playground and surfacing equipment is available at www.ipema.org

Protective Eyewear

DTL also serves as the administrator for the Protective Eyewear Certification Council (PECC). Testing is performed to ASTM F803 Standard Specification for Eye Protectors for Selected Sports and ASTM F1776 Standard Specification for Eye Protective Devices for Paintball Sports. The program is open to all protective eyewear manufacturers. Additional information on this program can be found at www.protecteyes.org
